A Hundred Pipers Inaugurate New Cathedral in Smolyan
Nikolina Chakardakova and Valya Balkanska brought to feet the audience in "Nikolay Haitov" theater
One hundred bagpipes sounded on the occasion of sanctification of the
new Orthodox church in the Rhodopes - St. Vissarion of Smolyan. A
spectacular show gathered over 700 in "Nikolay Haitov" drama theater in
Smolyan Sunday evening. The overbrimming hall sang along carried away
by the beautiful voices of Nikolina Cahakardakova and Valya Balkanska.
They sang the most famous Rhodopean and Macedonian songs to celebrate
the sanctification of Bulgaria's second large cathedral. The audience
also rejoiced at the performance of the "Rhodopa" folk ensemble.
Nikolina changed into three different outfits in two hours -
traditional golden galloons made way for typical Macedonian embroidery.
The "Nightingale of Pirin" brought the audience to feet when she
started the national anthem of Bulgaria. Special greetings sounded from
the stage to the main donors of the new church - Zdravka and Todor
Batkovs. The three-hour celebration ended with a traditional horo (ring
dance) in which all guests joined in.
