Saint Marina Protects the Church in Smolyan

Saint Marina will protect the newly-built St. Vissarion Church in the heart of the Rhodopes, which will be sanctified today. Her relics, donated by Arsenius, Metropolitan of Plovdiv, will be inbuilt in the altar. Thus, Saint Marina will become the church's patron saint.

Four years after its first sod was turned, the church will open its doors today to the chime of eleven bells. A seven-year-old child will read Our Father and let out a white dove, a symbol of God's blessing for the church and the town.

The mass will be shown live on two big video screens in front of the church.

Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev will congratulate the citizens and guests on their new church and Lawyer Todor Batkov and his wife Zdravka, who are the main benefactors of the church, will be declared honorary citizens of Smolyan.
